In Ephemeral Icons, a once-sacred image is transformed into a meditation on modern-day devotion. The classic depiction of a guardian angel guiding two innocent children across a bridge is subverted—here, the celestial figure is no longer a divine protector but Mickey Mouse, an icon of corporate omnipresence. The children, once symbols of faith and purity, are unmistakably marked by consumer culture, dressed in McDonald’s branding and clutching Coca-Cola bottles.
This piece plays with nostalgia, pulling from the comforting aesthetics of religious art while questioning the shift in our collective reverence. Where we once looked to saints and spiritual figures, we now find salvation in the icons of capitalism. Ephemeral Icons invites the viewer to reflect on the commodification of belief, the way global brands have replaced old-world deities, and the fleeting nature of the icons we worship today.
