Ties to the Past
Acrylic paint on canvas with rope
What began as a digital collage has evolved into a vivid, layered painting that merges personal mythology with cultural fragments. Ties to the Past explores the tension between who we were and who we are becoming—an intimate reckoning with identity, memory, and release.
At the center, the human figure is both grounded and entangled, physically bound yet emotionally expressive. The rope becomes a literal and symbolic device: restraint, history, connection, and ultimately, something to be shed. The figures feel caught in a moment of transition—neither fully held nor fully free—suggesting the complexity of letting go of past selves that once felt essential.
Surrounding elements—playful, nostalgic, and surreal—collide across the canvas. Cartoon imagery, devotional references, and theatrical poses coexist in a dreamlike landscape, echoing how memory itself is constructed: nonlinear, exaggerated, and deeply personal. The bright palette and shifting spaces contrast with the vulnerability of the figures, creating a push and pull between joy and discomfort, fantasy and truth.
The rope border enclosing the canvas extends the theme beyond the imagery, framing the entire piece as something bound—contained yet on the verge of unraveling.
While rooted in the idea of releasing outdated versions of oneself, the work remains open-ended. It invites viewers to reflect on their own attachments: What are we holding onto? What is holding onto us? And what does it take to finally let go?
