Never Too Far
Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas, 48 x 36 in
Never Too Far is a richly layered, narrative-driven cityscape that transforms an ordinary block into a living archive of memory, culture, and belonging. What began as a final project for an introductory painting course evolved into a fully realized world—one built through collage, texture, and vibrant color, where personal history and collective experience intertwine.
At the center of the composition is a neighborhood anchored by a corner mercado, flanked by intimate glimpses into everyday life: apartment windows revealing quiet, private moments; figures mid-conversation or passing through; a street vendor, a parked car, a lone seated figure—all suspended in a rhythm that feels both specific and universal. The use of found imagery, hand-painted signage, and layered materials creates a tactile sense of place, evoking the visual density of urban Los Angeles.
The piece functions as both portrait and love letter—to the city, to nostalgia, and to loved ones who remain present through memory. Iconography drawn from cultural, religious, and commercial sources merges seamlessly, reflecting the hybridity of identity and the way environments hold emotional residue. Each surface—brick, stucco, storefront, sky—carries evidence of time, touch, and intention.
Through its intricate storytelling and dimensionality, Never Too Far invites viewers to linger, to look closer, and to recognize fragments of their own histories within the scene. It suggests that home is not fixed to a single place, but built from memory, community, and the enduring presence of those we carry with us.
